An 85-year-old Chester County woman has been charged with insurance fraud after her son allegedly caused a fatal accident while driving her pickup truck, police said Wednesday.

Louise Landis registered and insured a Dodge Ram in her name and permitted her son, who had a poor driving record, to drive it, police said.

The mother allegedly never drove the truck, though she claimed in insurance papers to be the sole driver. Her son, Robert, 50, was listed as an "excluded driver" on her policy, police said.

He is in jail awaiting trial on homicide charges in connection with the April crash in Westtown Township in which motorcyclist Liam Crowley, 24, of Chesterbrook, was killed.

Landis' blood-alcohol level was three times the legal limit, officials said, and beer cans were strewed about his vehicle.

Louise Landis, of West Chester, was arrested by the Westtown-East Goshen Regional Police Department. She faces one count of insurance fraud, a first-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to five years in prison. She is free on $5,000 unsecured bail.
