Methadone clinic's approval is again appealed

Posted: July 11, 2013

OPPONENTS of a proposed methadone clinic in Holmesburg continued their fight yesterday, challenging a court ruling giving the clinic necessary zoning approval.

The appeal, which was filed in Commonwealth Court, seeks to overturn a Common Pleas Court ruling in favor of Healing Way, which is proposed for a site on Frankford Avenue near Decatur Street.

Neighbors, along with state Rep. Kevin Boyle and City Councilman Bobby Henon, argue that the clinic is not a permitted use under the current zoning and that it would be too close to a residential neighborhood and a day care.

The group announced the challenge yesterday during a protest outside the proposed site. Organizers said they will hold another rally next week.

Healing Way initially received a zoning permit from the city's Department of Licenses & Inspections, but neighbors appealed to the Zoning Board of Adjustments, which overturned it. Healing Way then filed an appeal in Common Pleas Court and won.
