Three men were hospitalized Thursday after suffering from heatstroke while tarring the roof of a Delaware County school, officials said.

The men, plus one other who was not taken to the hospital, were tarring the roof of Chichester Middle School in Upper Chichester around 1 p.m. when one was overcome by heat and collapsed. Fire crews came to the scene, took the men down and transported three to Crozer Chester Medical Center, where they were given fluids and expected to recover.

The tar had been heated to as much as 400 degrees, according to a fire official who declined to give his name.

"It was almost like putting them inside an oven," he said.
