La Salle-Temple game set for Palestra

Posted: August 16, 2013

LA SALLE and Temple have agreed to move their games to the Palestra the next two seasons. This season's game (Saturday, Jan. 18, noon) will be preceded by ESPN College GameDay. Tickets will be split evenly between the schools.

The game, which will be on ESPN or ESPN2, would have been at Gola Arena this season and at the Liacouras Center next season. The Palestra game will be the culmination of ESPN's "My Home Court" initiative - a weeklong celebration of college hoops' best venues.

La Salle coach John Giannini has been a big proponent of having all Big 5 games in the Palestra.

"All college basketball fans watch College GameDay," Giannini said. "It's a great honor and opportunity to be chosen from all the nation's games to have ESPN's coverage. The nation will see a great game in the most historic building in all of college basketball between two strong and tradition-rich rivals. It will also show fans everywhere the unmatched uniqueness of Philadelphia Big 5 basketball."

La Salle and Temple shared the Big 5 title last season with 3-1 records. This will be the first Temple-La Salle game in the Palestra since 1989.

Temple coach Fran Dunphy played at the Palestra for La Salle and had the keys to the building for nearly 2 decades as Penn's coach.

"This is a great opportunity to showcase Temple basketball and the Philadelphia Big 5 to a national television audience," Dunphy said. "It is a win-win for the city, as well as for both programs."

Rece Davis is the GameDay host. ESPN analysts Jay Bilas, Digger Phelps and Jalen Rase will be on the set. GameDay has been to 44 different campuses and has made 71 stops since it began in 2005.
