Man punches police officer, then flees

A police officer with the Delaware River Port Authority was sitting in his patrol car at the Ferry Avenue PATCO stop when a man walked up to him and punched him through his open car window Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The attacker had approached the officer's window shortly before 1 p.m. Officers are often approached with questions, said Tim Ireland, DRPA spokesman, and the officer rolled his window down, expecting a question.

But the man threw a fist, punching the officer in the eye. The attacker then fled on foot.

Taken to Cooper University Hospital with complaints of blurry vision, the officer was expected to make a complete recovery, Ireland said.

The area was cordoned off while other area police departments helped search for the man; among them was the Cherry Hill Police Department's K-9 unit, Ireland said.

Around 2:45, the search was called off without an arrest.

"The DRPA police are confident that at some point he will be apprehended and arrested," Ireland said.
