Authorities are investigating the "sudden death" of an 18-year-old Villanova University student who was found in a dormitory room Thursday morning.

No cause of death has yet been determined for Kinara Patel, a sophomore at the Villanova School of Business, but police said there were no obvious signs of foul play or suicide. An autopsy is to be conducted Friday morning by the Delaware County medical examiner.

Patel, who police said was from Northern New Jersey, spent Wednesday night out with friends in Bryn Mawr, Radnor Township Police Lt. Andy Block said.

Investigators are piecing together a timeline, but Block said that Patel apparently died overnight and that alcohol may have been a factor.

A friend called 911 shortly before 10 a.m. after finding Patel unresponsive in a room in Sullivan Hall, a residence hall on the school's main campus. The school would not say if she was in her own room.

Patel had no apparent health problems, Block said.

"To lose someone this young is devastating," said Liz Kennedy Walsh, associate vice president of Villanova, at an afternoon news conference in Radnor.

Patel had just started her second year at Villanova. Undergraduate students started moving in last weekend, with classes starting Monday.

"All of us here at Villanova are saddened to learn of this tragedy and extend our deepest sympathy and prayers to family and friends of this student," John Stack, vice president for student life, wrote in an e-mail to students and faculty.

The university community planned to gather Thursday night in the St. Thomas of Villanova Church to pray for Patel and her family.
