Just a few phone calls is all Pat Smith needed Thursday afternoon before giving an oral commitment to play basketball at Cornell.

The Big Red made the offer to Smith earlier in the day, and the Archbishop Wood senior then phoned some family members to make sure he was making the right decision.

"Everyone just told me that I need to take it," Smith said.

Smith, a 6-foot-5 small forward/shooting guard, is a returning, two-time all-Catholic League selection and averaged 17 points last season. He also had offers from Lafayette and Binghamton.

Smith visited Cornell in June. The Upstate New York campus is "beautiful," he said, and the team has great facilities.

"The coaches preach that the team is a family, and I just can't wait to be a part of that family," Smith said.

New Vikings coach John Mosco said Smith is "extremely" intelligent and was waiting for Cornell to offer him. The program started recruiting Smith in the spring.

"He comes from a great family," Mosco said. "It's a great opportunity for him."
