"I was waiting for this day since the end of my sophomore year," said Dooley, who ran 11 times for 97 yards and completed 3 of 5 passes for 47 yards. "It was my time to take control of the team."
Dooley, whose 8-yard touchdown run gave Springside Chestnut Hill an early lead, reaped the rewards of his extra preparation. He noted the aggressiveness of Washington's defensive ends, and sure enough, he found a lane inside the right end before racing up the right sideline and breaking the game open with a 63-yard touchdown run.
"I just reacted off what I saw," said Dooley, who also iced the game with an interception in the final minute.
Even though Dooley struggled to rest before the game, it was out of excitement and not nerves. When he appeared to be tripped on his long touchdown run up the sideline, he stayed composed and regained his balance before finishing the rush.
"I wasn't nervous at all," said Dooley, who watched episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants to make sure he relaxed before the game. "It was the greatest feeling of my life."
"We had a good high school quarterback last year, but Paul just makes plays," Springside Chestnut Hill coach Rick Knox said. "He just has 'it.'
"His confidence really exudes into the rest of our offense."
From his confidence and preparation to his execution, Dooley plans on giving opposing teams some sleepless nights throughout the season.
