Willingboro man sentenced in try to kill officer

A Willingboro man was sentenced to 66 years in prison Wednesday for attempting to kill a Camden City officer two years ago while running from police.

Adam Reed, 32, was found guilty of attempted murder and weapons and drug charges, including possession with intent to distribute cocaine within 1,000 feet of a school, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office said.

Reed must serve more than 47 years before he is eligible for parole.

On June 22, 2011, city narcotics detectives with the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force conducting surveillance of drug activity on Newton Avenue, between Spruce and Pine Streets in the Bergen Square neighborhood, saw Reed selling drugs from the trunk of a Ford Taurus, officials said.

A codefendant, Elizabeth Pitko, 42, of Bordentown, was operating the Taurus, which Reed had rented, while he made the transactions from the trunk.

When officers closed in to arrest Reed, he jumped into the Taurus and Pitko drove off. Pitko crashed into several cars after a pursuit, authorities said.

Reed got out of the Taurus and ran. Camden sergeants chased him.

An officer tripped on a driveway apron, fell face forward, and injured a leg. But he continued to chase Reed, authorities said.

Reed drew a .45-caliber handgun and fired at the officer. The officer dived to the ground to take cover but tore his hamstrings.

Reed fired again at the officer, who could not return fire. Then Reed's gun jammed. He dropped the weapon and ran again, officials said.

The injured officer managed to get possession of the gun. Other officers continued chasing Reed.

The officers fought with Reed and cuffed him, authorities said.

The three officers - Sgts. Benito Gonzalez, Chris Frucci, and Victor Diaz - recovered from their injuries and returned to duty. The three are now members of the Camden County police force, which replaced the city department this year.

On May 6, Pitko pleaded guilty to drug charges and eluding police.

A dozen uniformed and plainclothes officers attended Wednesday's sentencing in Superior Court in Camden.
