Here's a closer look at five games as the 2013 football season kicks off Thursday night.

Washington Township at Eastern, 6 p.m. The Minutemen defense has been tough on the Vikings offense in recent seasons. Washington Township will need another strong effort to contain Eastern senior quarterback Tom Flacco. Pick: Eastern, 24-14.

Lenape at Cherokee, 7. Lenape has started slow and finished fast the last two years. The Indians would like to flip half that script but face a tough challenge vs. the experienced Chiefs. Pick: Cherokee, 17-10.

Paul VI at Cherry Hill West, 7. The visiting Eagles bring a fast-paced offense featuring one of South Jersey's most promising juniors, wide receiver Irvin Charles. The Lions will counter with a defense led by safety Rodney Williams, a Syracuse recruit. Pick: Paul VI, 21-20.

Seneca at Moorestown, 7. The Golden Eagles will be sturdy up front and always commit to their ground game. Moorestown has a playmaker in senior quarterback Tyreek Robinson. Pick: Moorestown, 14-7.

Shawnee at Kingsway, 7. The Renegades and host Dragons are cofavorites in the WJFL National Division as well as South Jersey Group 4 playoff contenders. Shawnee has a solid defense led by senior linebacker Anthony DiOrio. Kingsway has one of the state's best breakaway running backs, senior Ray Lawry. Pick: Kingsway, 20-17.
