Royal family tidbits
Prince William, or Flight Lt. William Wales, as he's known to his flyboy buddies, has left the Royal Air Force after 71/2 years. William will focus his energies on public-service projects, including veterans affairs and "the field of conservation, particularly in respect of endangered species," Kensington Palace says.
In other royal news, William has persuaded his former nanny to come out of retirement to care for Prince George, his lovely chubby baby with Duchess Kate. The royal nanny, Jessie Webb, 71, was in action Thursday when she, her charge, and Kate turned into a McDonald's during a road trip in the United Kingdom.
USA Today says Webb needed some quiet time to feed George.
Are there no limits to prejudice?
Big Brother host and CBS News producer Julie Chen, 43, whose mom is Burmese Chinese and her dad Chinese, had plastic surgery 20 years ago to make her eyes look more Caucasian, she revealed to Sharon Osbourne on CBS' gabfest The Talk. She did it as a reaction to the intense racism she faced when she tried to become a TV news anchor in Dayton, Ohio. She said the producer told her she was too ethnic to be on the air. He told her, "Because of your Asian eyes, I've noticed that when you're on camera . . . you look disinterested and bored because your eyes are so heavy, they are so small."
Chen's gnawing insecurity grew when a New York agent told her, "I cannot represent you unless you get plastic surgery to make your eyes look bigger." So she did. "I don't like to live with regrets," said Chen. "No one's more proud of being Chinese than I am."
J.K. Rowling back in the movies
Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling is writing a screenplay for a new film series for Warner Bros. The first film, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, is named after a Hogwarts textbook and will be about its fictional writer, Newt Scamander. "Although it will be set in the . . . community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years," Rowling says on Facebook, it "is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world."
Tidbits 'n' pieces
The Huffington Post has uploaded 17 pics that definitively prove Miley Cyrus didn't invent twerking, including an '87 shot of Madonna in a rump-adelic dance. . . . AMC will hang on to its Breaking Bad cachet with Better Call Saul, a prequel about the less-than-moral attorney Saul Goodman ( Bob Odenkirk).
Miley Cyrus tidbits
"If people get past the point that I'm naked and you actually look at me, you can tell that I actually look more broken than even the song sounds," Miley Cyrus says of her aggressively sexualized vid "Wrecking Ball." Meanwhile, Britney Spears tweets that her collaboration with Miley, the single "Work Bitch," will be available Monday.
