Sat. S.J. football: Duo shines for victorious Paul VI

Posted: September 23, 2013

Alec Vignola didn't complete as many passes Saturday to Irvin Charles as he did last week. But it would be hard to do any better on the ones he did.

The prolific duo connected four times - three for touchdowns - to lead Paul VI to a 42-36 win over visiting Clearview in a nonleague football game.

Charles finished with 102 yards; he also rushed for a touchdown. Vignola completed 13 of 24 passes for 214 yards and four touchdowns. In a season-opening 30-24 loss to Cherry Hill West, Vignola and Charles hooked up seven times for 190 yards.

Also for the Eagles (1-1), ranked 21st in South Jersey by The Inquirer, Lonnie Moore carried seven times for 90 yards. Clearview fell to 1-1.

In other nonleague action:

Marquan Jones rushed for 153 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries to lead Pennsauken to a 48-7 win at Cherry Hill East. The Indians (1-1) scored 35 points in the second quarter. Cherry Hill East (0-2) spoiled the shutout with a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Shaun Brooks was in the middle of practically everything Pemberton did defensively in a 34-7 defeat of visiting Ewing. Brooks, a defensive end, sacked the quarterback three times and forced a fumble. He also caught a two-point conversion pass on a fake extra point. Playing just the first half, Quincey Lambert ran for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Pemberton evened its record at 1-1.

Tommy Wyatt threw two touchdown passes to Bryan Brennan, and Overbrook won at Audubon, 22-12, to improve to 1-1. Kahleil Chisolm ran for two touchdowns for Audubon (0-2).

Colonial Conference Liberty

Zaire Gibson ran for two first-half touchdowns, and Sterling streaked to a 28-0 win at Haddon Heights. Gibson also threw for a touchdown on a halfback-option pass to Julian Blackshear as the Silver Knights moved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the league. Haddon Heights is 0-2, 0-1.
