N.C. power forward commits to St. Joe's

MARKELL LODGE first dunked when he was in seventh grade. He was 6-3. He is now a 6-7 power forward with the emphasis on power. He is a dunk machine in the Ronald Roberts mold. And the senior from Pace Academy in North Carolina is the first member of the Saint Joseph's Class of 2014.

"The academics there are real good," said Lodge who took his official visit to campus a few weeks ago. "I like the way they play on the court. They go and up down."

The Hawks will start three seniors this season. Two of them, Roberts and Halil Kanacevic, are big men. So SJU definitely needs frontcourt help for the future. Lodge, who is rated by most services as a top 10 player in North Carolina, is the first big man in next year's freshmen class. He will not be the last.
