A POLICE SERGEANT charged with driving under the influence after a Sept. 14 crash that killed a Fishtown man posted 10 percent of his $50,000 bail after his arraignment yesterday.
Court documents show that Thomas Winkis, a 21-year veteran who worked as an aide to Deputy Commissioner Thomas Wright, was charged Friday with vehicular homicide, involuntary manslaughter, DUI and related offenses. Commissioner Charles Ramsey suspended him for 30 days with intent to dismiss.
Police said Winkis, 44, was driving a Dodge Challenger southbound on State Road shortly before midnight the night of the crash when he slammed into a Ford Econoline van driven by David Farries at the intersection of Ashburner Street. The light at the intersection was not working at the time.
