Report: Bryzgalov close to signing with ECHL team

Posted: October 04, 2013

ILYA BRYZGALOV may soon have plenty of reasons to not fall asleep - both on the bench and in team meetings. There are plenty of things to do in Sin City.

According to a report from TSN's Darren Dreger, Bryzgalov is close to signing with the Las Vegas Wranglers of the ECHL in an attempt to one day get back to the NHL.

Bryzgalov, 33, has been unable to find a team since being cut by the Flyers in June with a $23 million buyout.

Even with their shaky goaltending situation, the Penguins were unwilling to take a flyer on Bryzgalov after it was announced yesterday that backup Tomas Vokoun will miss the next 3 to 6 months with blood clots.

The ECHL is North America's top "Double A" league, one step below the AHL. The Wranglers, who play in the 7,700-seat Orleans Arena off the Strip, are one of the few ECHL teams without an NHL affiliate.

Bryzgalov is still living in South Jersey while his two children attend school in the area.
