The Phillies' October roster cleaning continued Thursday when four more players - Michael Martinez, Pete Orr, Zach Miner, and Mauricio Robles - were outrighted off the 40-man roster. It could signal the end for Martinez, one of the worst Phillies hitters in the modern era.
Martinez hit .175 with a .175 on-base percentage and .175 slugging percentage in 40 plate appearances this past season. His .495 OPS in 396 career plate appearances is the lowest for any Phillies position player with as much experience since 1919. Martinez was a Rule 5 selection in 2010.
This is the third time Martinez, 31, has been sent outright to the minors, thus he is a free agent. It is not necessarily the end of his Phillies career; he was outrighted last winter but later signed a minor-league contract.
