Prep's defense quieted Wood's passing game throughout. Sophomore quarterback Tom Garlick connected on only 3 of 13 passes (he was 0 for 3 in the first half) for 16 yards.
Early in the third quarter, after making a fumble recovery at the Prep 47, Wood (5-1, 1-0 Catholic League Class AAA) had the chance to build on its 21-14 advantage.
The Vikings reached the Prep 34, but, following a 3-yard gain by McClenton, sophomore outside linebacker Shawn Harris dumped Garlick for a 3-yard loss, and Garlick's third-and-10 pass fell incomplete.
From there, the Hawks (4-1, 1-0 Catholic League Class AAAA) put together an 11-play, 80-yard scoring drive. It opened with Chris Martin's 39-yard pass to John Reid, and ended with Martin's 6-yard toss (between two Wood defenders) to Olamide Zaccheaus. Game tied.
On the ensuing series, Prep senior middle linebacker Ryan McNulty intercepted a pass and returned it 20 yards to the Wood 36. Two plays after Martin's 24-yard keeper, Zaccheaus scored from the 4.
In the fourth quarter, after an 11-play drive, the Prep's Pat Walsh booted a 33-yard field goal to clinch the victory. The game ended on safety Dillon DeIuliis' interception.
Junior end Armen Ware keyed Prep's defense with eight tackles, including six solo stops. McNulty (six solos) and safety Vince Moffett were next in line with six tackles apiece.
Ware was joined up front by fellow end David DellaPorta and tackles Joe DuMond and Jake Strain; Nick Vandevere (four tackles) was the other outside linebacker; and Reid and Rob DiSanto (three solos) were the cornerbacks.
In the recent head-to-head series, the Hawks, who won by 23-10 last year, and Vikings are tied, 2-2.
