C.H. West holds off Woodrow Wilson

After Cherry Hill West's senior captain and quarterback, Rodney Williams, went down with a bruised leg in the second quarter, sophomore tailback Tyrone Williams stepped up.

Tyrone Williams carried the ball 28 times for 193 yards and two touchdowns Saturday to lead Cherry Hill West to a 34-33 victory over Woodrow Wilson in a West Jersey Football League interdivision game full of twists and turns.

The win - secured when West blocked a Wilson extra-point attempt with 7 minutes, 51 seconds to play - was the third in a row for the Lions (4-1). Host Wilson (1-4) dropped its fourth straight game.

"It feels great. This feeling is unreal right now," Tyrone Williams said. "We come from a program that never succeeded, but now we're changing things around."

Rodney Williams aggravated an injury that had occurred eight days earlier when he ran 24 yards to inside the Tigers' 5-yard line. West was leading, 12-6, at the time, and junior backup Joey Argentina took over.

Williams left after going 6 for 11 for 93 yards. He had two touchdowns - one throwing, one running - and an interception.

Argentina filled in nicely, completing 10 of 16 passes for 74 yards and the game-winning touchdown pass to Chris Pascall early in the fourth quarter.

"I feel very comfortable with Joey as our quarterback," Lions coach Brian Wright said. "He was our quarterback last year when Rodney was out, so we were able to pull him out and get the win."

The game's biggest play came on the final one of the third quarter, with Wilson holding a 27-20 lead. Tyrone Williams took a first-down carry 70 yards to the end zone, and despite a missed two-point conversion, all the momentum shifted to the Lions.

"He has the most heart of any kid I've coached in 15 years," Wright said. "When it gets down to it, I want the ball in his hands."

The Tigers then muffed and lost the ensuing kickoff. Four plays later, Argentina found Pascall on a 22-yard fade. The two-point conversion gave the Lions a 34-27 lead.

Wilson answered when Malik McGahee returned a blocked punt for a TD, but the Lions blocked the point-after kick.

"Last year at this point, we had only won one game," Argentina said. "To be 4-1 at this point is a great feeling."

Wright said Rodney Williams should return for Friday's home game against Moorestown.
