S. Jersey Boys: Tues. S.J. boys: Cherokee tops Lenape

Denis Hickey pounced on a shot by Mike Ross that ricocheted off the crossbar in the 55th minute, and sixth-seeded Cherokee held off visiting No. 11 Lenape, 1-0, in the first round of the South Jersey Group 4 soccer tournament Tuesday.

Clearview 1, Millville 0: Joe Dibabbo scored in the 95th minute on an assist from Gavin Bright to lift the host, third-seeded Pioneers. Ricky Nelson made four saves. Sean Matias had 16 saves for No. 14 Millville.

Shawnee 1, Rancocas Valley 0 PKs: Dalton Wu made seven saves in regulation and two more in overtime, as the No. 13 Renegades won at No. 4 Rancocas Valley. Dave Armbruster, Sean Welch, Justin Wigley and Kurt Boenning each scored in the shootout.

Eastern 2, Kingsway 0: Alex Noel and Alec Serry scored to pace the second-seeded hosts by No. 15 Eastern.

Washington Township 5, Absegami 0: Zach Burns scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the top-seeded hosts past No. 16 Absegami.

Group 3 First Round

Steve Ersing scored in the 38th minute, and No. 3 Timber Creek held off visiting, No. 14 Seneca, 1-0. Justin Smith posted a six-save shutout.

Burlington Township 1, Lacey Township 0: Jacob Bebe's goal midway through the second half lifted the No. 10 Falcons to a win at No. 7 Lacey Township.

Delsea 1, Westampton Tech 0: Louis Moffa's goal was all the No. 2 Crusaders needed to get past No, 15 Westampton Tech.

Hammonton 3, Cumberland 1: Shane Guyer's hat trick powered the No. 9 Blue Devils to a win at No. 8 Cumberland.

Group 2 First Round

Kevin Nelan and Jesse Weick scored to lift host, No. 8 Haddon Heights past ninth-seeded Deptford, 2-1.

Middle Township 4, Pemberton 0: Tanner Kerr made four saves for his 15th shutout, and the No. 2 Panthers rolled past the visiting No. 15 seed.

Haddonfield 1, Barnegat 0: Brendan Warner scored and Jonathan Baxter made five saves to carry the host No. 4 Bulldogs past No. 13 Barnegat.

Group 1 First Round

Kevin Tierney scored twice, and No. 14 Woodbury upset host No. 14 Lindenwold. Casey Sharp made eight saves.

Pennsville 2, Burlington City 1, PKs: Sean Digerness made 19 saves, and the No. 7 Pennsville advanced over host, No. 10 Burlington City in penalty kicks.
