EXETER TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Before Katie O'Donnell walked off the field, she hugged her surrounding teammates.

"No tears," the West Chester Henderson senior captain told them. "Great season."

Henderson lost in the PIAA state Class AAA field hockey state semifinals to Emmaus, 2-1, Tuesday at Exeter Township High.

"We put everything out there that we could," O'Donnell said. "I don't think we ever expected to get as far as we did."

West Chester Henderson (24-1), in its first state semifinals appearance, gave up a first-half goal to Emmaus' Kristen Mikelson.

Henderson tied the score with 15 minutes left in the game on Brianna Bolon's penalty stroke, but Emmaus (26-0) regained the lead three minutes later when Ashley Moxey scored.

"I thought our girls played well," said Jen O'Donnell, the West Chester Henderson coach and mother of Katie. "We just had a great season. I can't really be sad."

"Not having lost all season, they were worried about what they would do when they lost. I said, 'You walk off the field, hold your head high, and be proud of the way you played all season.' "

Another reason the team stayed composed was what it accomplished this season.

The seniors helped lead the Warriors farther than they had ever been in field hockey, and the underclassmen will have an opportunity to go even deeper.

"It was awesome to play in a semifinals game, and it was an awesome season overall," said Katie O'Donnell, who has committed to Penn State for lacrosse.

"They have a lot more ahead of them. This is a program and we have to keep building, so take it as a lesson."

After the game, Katie O'Donnell was already looking forward to the bus ride back home.

She knew the team would sing its favorite Spice Girls songs.

After all, there was no reason for tears.
