Sixers Notes: Sixers coach preaches patience

By now, most 76ers fans know this season will have more lows than highs. The Sixers are expected to struggle while they groom young talent.

"We are all competitive," coach Brett Brown said Wednesday before his team beat the Houston Rockets, 123-117, in overtime at the Wells Fargo Center. "We all want to win. So these peaks and valleys are inevitable. It's stuff we are going to have to deal with and be big boys and get through it. And we will."

The Sixers (5-4) snapped a two-game losing streak with the win.

"We want our city's team to do well," Brown said. "We want the team that we coach to do well. The players want to do well.

"And sometimes you have to admit that we are grooming some very young players."

Honoring Hamels

Phillies lefthander Cole Hamels and his wife, Heidi, accepted the Sixers' Heroes Among Us award at Wednesday's game. The Hamels Foundation received the proceeds from the night's 50/50 raffle.

The couple started the foundation as a way to support quality education in America. They also established a school in Malawi, Africa.

87ers hire coach

Rod Baker was officially named coach of the Sixers' NBA Development League team, the Delaware 87ers.

A former St. Joseph's assistant, Baker takes over the 87ers after serving last season as an assistant for the Bakersfield Jam of the D-League.

Before that, he spent seven seasons as the head coach of the Rochester RazorSharks of the Premier Basketball League.
