Before the game, Gateway girls' soccer coach Shawn Cunning noted that Shore Regional's record wasn't reflective of its play.

"They beat Metuchen" in the Central Jersey championship game, Cunning said, referring to a Metuchen team that had a 21-1-1 record. "They must be good."

Shore didn't look like a team that entered play with a 9-8-2 record in Tuesday's Group 1 state semifinal against Gateway.

Led by junior striker Samantha McDonough, Shore scored a 3-0 victory over Gateway on the artificial turf at Haddonfield.

"They were good," Cunning said. "They were very organized."

McDonough, who according to Shore coach George Moutis has drawn recruiting interest from North Carolina, scored one goal and assisted on another as the Blue Devils advanced to Sunday's state final at the College of New Jersey.

Gateway (16-8) was looking to make the state finals for the first time. Goalie Antonia Pote made 16 saves for the Gators.

"We just couldn't seem to put our passes together," Gateway senior Angel Villari said.

Kelly Diehle, Casey Pietroforte, and Sarah Zuzulock created good scoring chances for Gateway in the second half.

Pietroforte looked to have cut Shore's lead to 2-1 early in the second half with a sharp shot with the Blue Devils' goalie out of position.

But Shore freshman Katie McDonough, Samantha's sister, raced back and made a goal-line save.

"She took it right off the goal line," Cunning said. "If we get one there, we can build on that."

Cunning said the loss didn't detract from the Gators' season.

"I laughed every day in practice," Cunning said. "This was a great group of girls."

Gateway 0 0 – 0

Shore 2 1 – 3

Goals: S-Katie Stephens, Lauren Britton, Samantha McDonough.

Saves: G-Antonia Pote 16; S-Katie Colaguori 8.
