John Matthew Klein IV, 38, of Philadelphia, a teacher in the city's public school system for 10 years, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, of melanoma at a hospice of the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Klein and Donna Geddes were married eight years ago at the Franklin Institute.

His family said Mr. Klein was a devoted father and loved to share his love of the outdoors with his children. When his daughter, Julia, now 4, was 2, he took her boating on Lake Nockamixon. Later, he took her camping.

Mr. Klein worked for 10 years as a special-education teacher at Esperanza Academy, a charter school in the Hunting Park section of the city. An avid runner, he founded and coached the school's cross-country team. He continued to foster the team after he was diagnosed with cancer in July 2011.

"Even while he was undergoing grueling chemo treatments, John refused to miss his team's cross-country meets," his family said in a statement.

Born and raised in Hatboro, Mr. Klein attended St. David Elementary School in Willow Grove. He graduated from Archbishop Wood High School in Warminster in 1993 and earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1997 from Lehigh University. He completed a master's degree in education at Temple University in 2003.

Between 2002 and 2008, Mr. Klein volunteered to be a Big Brother as part of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southeastern Philadelphia.

He was a lifelong Phillies, Eagles, and Temple Owls fan. His hobbies included fishing and skiing. He also was a beer connoisseur, his family said.

In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by a son, Jack; his father, John III; a brother; a sister; and nieces and nephews.

Services were held Monday, Nov. 25.

Contributions may be made to Joseph's House of Camden, 20 Church St., Camden, N.J. 08105, or via www.josephshouseofcamden.com. It is a homeless shelter where Mr. Klein volunteered.
