Police are investigating the alleged sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl on New Year's night in South Philadelphia, blocks away from the Second Street Mummers celebrations.

The assault occurred around 9 p.m. on the 100 block of Tree Street, near Wolf Street, said Lt. Anthony McFadden of the Special Victims Unit.

The girl told police she had just left a friend's house when a 19-year-old male approached her near some scaffolding at a construction site, McFadden said.

The two engaged in conversation, McFadden said, but then neighbors heard screams.

Patrol officers assigned to the Second Street Mummers detail quickly apprehended the alleged assailant, McFadden said.

The suspect remained in police custody Thursday afternoon, McFadden said, although no charges had been filed.

"We are still conducting interviews," he said.
