John H. Speigel Sr., 74, of Haddon Heights, who retired in 1993 as police chief there, died of complications of Alzheimer's disease on Sunday, Dec. 29, at Cooper University Hospital in Camden.

Born in Camden, Mr. Speigel attended Haddon Heights High School and served in the Army.

After working as a painter with his father at Frank C. Speigel & Son, he joined the Haddon Heights police force in 1964, where he served for 29 years, his wife, Marion, said.

He was chief from 1988 to 1993. "This is a quiet town," and it stayed that way during his term, she said.

A Mason from the 1960s, he was also a volunteer fireman.

Besides his wife of 30 years, he is survived by son John Jr., daughters Jeane Paul and Lori, 10 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

A viewing was set from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Healey Funeral Home, 9 White Horse Pike, Haddon Heights, before an 11 a.m. funeral service there. Interment is to be in New St. Mary's Cemetery, Bellmawr.
