Two killed, found in burning home

Posted: January 05, 2014

TWO DAYS after celebrating the lowest year-end homicide count in more than four decades, Philadelphia recorded its first homicides of 2014.

And they were nothing if not notable.

The bodies of a man and a woman were found inside a burning home on Ormond Street near Bristol in Juniata Park late Thursday, police spokeswoman Officer Christine O'Brien said.

Both had been shot once in the head and pronounced dead at the scene by medics.

Fire personnel first responded to the scene at 11:25 p.m., but turned the scene over to detectives from the Homicide Unit when the bodies were discovered, O'Brien said.

A police source said a canine unit dispatched to the scene identified that an accelerant had been used to fuel the blaze, and that police are officially ruling the fire an arson.

The victims' identities were not released. Homicide detectives are investigating the case, O'Brien said.
