Seven slain in Philadelphia since Jan. 1

Two men were shot to death Sunday night in West Philadelphia - the sixth and seventh homicides of a young new year.

Police said Monday that they were continuing to investigate the shooting in the 6200 block of Media Street, where an unknown assailant opened fire on three men sitting in a car about 8:05 p.m.

Investigators initially were called to the scene by a report of a person with a gun, only to be told upon arrival that three victims had been taken by car to Lankenau Hospital. Officers found the wounded men there.

Karon Bailey, 24, of the 5200 block of West Jefferson Street, was shot multiple times in the head and body and died at 8:34 p.m. Basir Amaker, 24, of the 5600 block of Elliot Street, died of gunshot wounds to the chest at 9:40 p.m. The third man, 22, whom police did not identify, was shot in the right leg and listed in stable condition.

Investigators said they had no motive in the shootings.

On Thursday, police and firefighters summoned at 11:45 p.m. to a home in the 4200 block of Ormond Street first extinguished a small kitchen fire, then found two people shot to death. Carmen Montas-Madera, 35, of the 4200 block of Ormond Street, was found in a second-floor front bedroom with a gunshot wound to the head. Norberta Lopez, 38, of the same address, was found in a rear bedroom with a head wound. The motive is unknown. No arrests have been made.

On Friday, officers responded to a report of a hospital case in the 2400 block of North Howard Street about 8:20 a.m. Upon arrival, police were directed to a parked black Toyota. Officers found a man lying across the front seat, stabbed multiple times in his neck and torso. Leocadio Del-Orbe, 60, of that block, was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Saturday, police were called to the 4900 block of North Franklin Street at 3:39 p.m. for a report of a person with a gun. Police found a man on a porch who had been shot in the head. Le'Quan Green, 22, of the 1500 block of North Felton Street, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have no motive in the shooting.

Also Saturday, at 10:44 p.m., police were called to the 1500 block of South 58th Street for a double shooting in which both victims survived. Police found a 15-year-old girl who had been shot in the left leg, and a 13-year-old boy also shot in the left leg. Both were taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and listed in stable condition. Police charged 18-year-old Larry Smith of the 5400 block of Willows Avenue with two counts of aggravated assault and related offenses.

On Sunday, police responded to a report of a male down on the highway in the 5800 block of North Marshall Street at 3:30 a.m. Officers and medics found a man, later identified as Tyrell Jones, 27, from the 5800 block of North Franklin Street, dead from a gunshot wound to the left side of the chest. No motive is known nor arrest made.

The same day, at 3:38 a.m., police were called to the 1400 block of Unity Street for a report of a shooting inside a home. Officers were met by a man who told them he had accidentally shot his girlfriend. Police found a 26-year-old woman in bed with a gunshot wound to her forehead. She was taken to Einstein Medical Center in critical condition. Police said Roger Morrison, 36, of that block, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and related offenses.
