Powell finished with 15 points, and Syracuse recruit Malachi Richardson, a 6-foot-6 junior swingman, added 23 points with eight rebounds and four steals for Trenton Catholic (3-3).
Junior forward Dennis Tunstall collected 19 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks for Medford Tech (4-4).
"We're a young team that has to learn how to put together 32 minutes," said Nick Powell, whose team built a 30-26 halftime lead.
Myles Powell played his first two varsity seasons at Medford Tech. He scored 886 points for the Jaguars and combined with then-junior Eli Cain to lead the team to the South Jersey Group 2 title last season.
But Cain transferred to St. Benedict's and Myles Powell transferred to Trenton Catholic last summer.
Myles Powell said it was "tough" to play against his old team.
"I was going against my old school and it was hard to play against them," said Powell, who has reclassified as a sophomore academically although he is regarded as a junior in terms of his eligibility under NJSIAA rules.
Trenton Catholic coach Fred Falchi said Powell is likely to play next season for the Iron Mikes, then participate as a fifth-year athlete at a non-NJSIAA program such as St. Benedict's or Life Center Academy.
Falchi said Powell played well under difficult circumstances.
"I thought he was pressing a little bit early, but he settled down," Falchi said. "He played much better in the second half."
Myles Powell said he realized last week that he was likely to score his 1,000th point against his old team.
The player said he received a congratulatory text message on his 1,000th point from Nick Powell on Sunday - a day early.
"I wanted to be the first," Nick Powell said. "I told him before the game I wished he was still with us. I'm proud of him. I wish him the best."
