Pa. Boys: Bucks runners take 1-2 in mile

Two of Bucks County's top distance runners edged it out on Saturday afternoon at the Track and Field Coaches Association of Greater Philadelphia boys' meet at Haverford College.

Ross Wilson, a senior from Council Rock North, pulled away from Central Bucks East's Jake Brophy to win the 1-mile run in 4 minutes, 31.55 seconds. Brophy, a sophomore, finished in 4:33.39.

Both runners placed in the top eight in November's PIAA Class AAAA cross-country championships.

Also at the meet:

Jake Brophy's brother, Frank, captured the 800-meter run. The C.B. East senior finished in 1:58.84.

Garnet Valley's Jake Irving won the 60-meter dash in 7.37 seconds.

Kieran Moore of Upper Dublin won the shot put with a mark of 53 feet, 2 inches, and Coatesville's Jonathan Jones won the high jump with a 6-foot leap.

Coatesville's Daniel Williams won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.43 seconds, just four-hundreths of a second ahead of Cheltenham's Cordell Richardson.

Boys' Basketball

Terrance Quinn hit five threes - including one to force overtime - as Radnor rallied past visiting Garnet Valley, 58-54, in a Central League game.

The senior guard finished with 18 points. Nick Kelly added 12 points, including the first five points in overtime, to spark the Red Raiders.

Also in the Central League:

Martin Dorsey scored 12 of his 16 points in the first half to help Conestoga get past host Strath Haven, 59-51.

SOL Challenge. Matt Penecale scored 20 points, went 8 for 8 from the foul line, and made five steals to lead host Abington past Cheltenham, 76-55.

Shane Degnan scored a career- high 13 points and Central Bucks South rolled over visiting Truman, 74-61. Senior guard Matt Scamuffo scored 17 of his game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter.

Junior Jimmy Murray scored a career-high 40 points and all 18 of Plymouth Whitemarsh's third-quarter points en route to a crushing of Hatboro-Horsham, 80-40. He had eight three-pointers, two steals, and two assists.

Host Bensalem knocked down 36 of its 45 foul shots to move past Wissahickon, 67-58. Senior guard Chris Kilcoyne scored 10 of his 21 points in the third quarter.

Matt Margolis and Josh McWilliams scored 13 points each and Council Rock North downed visiting North Penn, 49-30.

Kobe Bryant Classic. Sam Lindgren scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Germantown Academy past Friends' Central, 62-44, at Lower Merion. The junior forward was named the game's MVP.

Play-By-Play Classic. Lamar Stevens scored 15 points and Eric Anderson added 10, but Haverford School fell to South Kent (Conn.), 48-45, at Harriton.

Jair Bolden scored 22 points and Jared Nickens added 20 points to lead Westtown past Life Center, 71-61.

Nonleague. Carnel Harley scored 19 points and Darrell Bryant and Vince Jackson added 15 points each to propel host Academy of the New Church past Freire Charter, 75-53.

Jawan Collins grabbed 11 rebounds and dished out eight assists to lead Academy Park over visiting Frankford, 86-72. The sophomore point guard finished with 17 points. Junior guard Travis Smith added five three-pointers for 21 points.
