Sat. Pa. wrestling: Wood clinches division

Archbishop Wood shut out Conwell-Egan on Saturday, 73-0, to clinch the Catholic League Red Division title and qualify for the wrestling playoffs for the first time since 2004.

Freshman Austin Gillick earned his first varsity pin at 132 pounds in 4 minutes, 27 seconds, helping Wood improve to 5-0 in the league.

The Vikings will return to the playoffs and host La Salle at 7 p.m. Monday.

Ghost Town Duals. Mason Houriet's major decision at 285 pounds was the difference in Pennsbury's 40-39 win against Hatboro-Horsham at the Ghost Town Duals at Abington.

Houriet beat Nick Schuck, 13-3, to cut Pennsbury's deficit to 39-34, but Hatboro-Horsham forfeited the final bout at 106 to give Pennsbury six points and the win.

Pennsbury went 4-0 at the duals, and Hatboro-Horsham was 4-1.

Elsewhere at the duals:

Upper Moreland's Jason Amy pinned David Shin of Lower Moreland in the final match to give the Golden Bears a 35-34 win. The 106-pound Amy finished off the fall in 46 seconds.

Wissahickon's Pat Fennell broke his school's wins record by pinning Brendon Thalheimer of Lower Moreland in 3:33 at 160 pounds. The pin gave Fennell 125 career wins, breaking Steve Pyle's record. Fennell won two more matches Saturday, giving him a 127-25 career mark. Lower Moreland won the match, 42-30.

Konkrete Duals. Spring-Ford swept through the Konkrete Duals at Northampton, winning all five of its matches. Ryan Hayes stood out at 113, picking up two pins, a major decision, and a technical fall.

Bishop McDevitt Duals. Michael O'Brien (160 pounds) and John Ferry (285) each won by pin as Archbishop Ryan snuck by Cardinal O'Hara, 42-40.
