Casey Murphy was named Tuesday as football coach at Gloucester Catholic.

Murphy, a 1999 Gloucester Catholic graduate, replaces Tony Garczynski, who was not rehired after 13 seasons.

Murphy has been an assistant at Gloucester Catholic since 2001. He was the defensive coordinator the last two seasons.

"I'm excited to have the chance to lead the program," Murphy said in a statement. "Gloucester Catholic is special because it has a great tradition of pride, spirit, and passion. I can't wait to get started."

Gloucester Catholic was 3-7 last season and lost its final five games. The Rams were 11-29 in the last four seasons.

From 2007-09, Gloucester Catholic was 25-8.

Head of School John Colman said Murphy was a "great fit as our head coach."

The school said Murphy, son of Gloucester Catholic athletic director Pat Murphy, was hired after a "comprehensive search."
