Michael J. Quintus, 62, of Maple Shade, a former accounting department staffer for the Philadelphia Gas Works, died of cancer Monday, Jan. 27, at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia.

After graduating from Cardinal Dougherty High School, where he played on the varsity football team, Mr. Quintus began a 30-year career with PGW.

Until beginning cancer treatment in September, Mr. Quintus had been a senior specialist in accounting at Cannon Financial Services in Mount Laurel, daughter Lynne Therese Chapin said.

While his three daughters were growing up, she said, he coached their softball and basketball teams in a community league in the Lawncrest neighborhood of Philadelphia.

"He was a big fan of St. Joe's Hawks," she said, and "had season tickets his whole life" for the university's basketball games.

But he had divided geographical loyalties. "He cheered for the L.A. Dodgers" because his father had been a fan when the team was in Brooklyn, she said.

Besides his daughter, Mr. Quintus is survived by daughters Sandra Sabo and Marcella Shyllon, two brothers, two sisters, two grandchildren, and his significant other, Pat Pownall. He is also survived by former wife Winifred McAllister.

A viewing was set from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Mark C. Tilghman Funeral Home, 38 N. Forklanding Rd., Maple Shade, and from 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 236 E. Main St., Maple Shade, before an 11 a.m. Funeral Mass there.

Donations may be sent to Fox Chase Cancer Center, 333 Cottman Ave., Philadelphia 19111-2497.
