Man critically wounded during purse-snatching

A 24-year-old man was in critical condition Friday after he was shot chasing after a man who had taken his girlfriend's purse overnight in North Philadelphia, Philadelphia police said.

Police on Friday were questioning three men in connection with Thursday's incident, which happened just before midnight on the 2600 block of West Lehigh Avenue.

The attack happened after the victim and his 23-year-old girlfriend walked out of his house heading toward his car. On the way, however, a man came up and grabbed her purse and took off, police said.

The woman's boyfriend ran after the purse-snatcher down Lehigh, but a second man appeared and shot him in the chest, police said. He collapsed and was taken to Temple University Hospital.

The men, who fled on foot, took $300 from the woman's purse and left it behind.

About 30 minutes after the robbery, police stopped three men on 25th between Harold and Huntingdon Streets.

One of the men matched the description of the purse-snatcher and the other of the shooter, police said. All three were taken to Northwest Detectives for "further investigation."
