Pa. Girls: Sat. Pa. girls: Downingtown East outlasts Shanahan

Trailing by as many as 10 points in the second half, Downingtown West came back and defeated Bishop Shanahan at home, 55-49, in double overtime Saturday in a Ches-Mont National girls' basketball game.

Free throws played a key role in the two overtime periods. Kerri Caruso sank one for Downingtown West with six seconds left in the first overtime to tie it, and the Whippets made 5 of 6 in the second OT to seal the win.

Maddie Dew led the Whippets with a game-high 17 points and added four steals.

Nonleague. Meghan Fowler hit back-to-back three-pointers in the fourth quarter to help Haverford High fend off visiting Council Rock North, 43-36. Fowler's 6-0 run broke open a 30-30 game. Jessica Gerber scored 12 points on four three-pointers for the Indians.

In other nonleague action:

G'mrice Davis scored 16 of Girard College's 18 fourth-quarter points in a 49-38 home win over Freire Charter. Davis finished with a game-high 30 points and 15 rebounds.

Pennsbury used a big second half to win at Villa Joseph Marie, 38-24. The Falcons outscored the Jems, 23-9, in the second half. Kaitlin Kelly scored 18 points and knocked down four three-pointers for Pennsbury. Sarah Alturuse defended the paint with seven blocks.

Mount St. Joseph won easily at St. Hubert, 72-35. Villanova-bound senior Alex Louin had 20 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals and was 10 for 10 from the line. The Mount improved to 19-2 this season.

Thirteen players scored for Villa Maria in a 66-31 home win over Chester. Jackie Carlin and Molly Namiotka led the Hurricanes with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

All eight St. Basil seniors scored on Senior Day in a 63-36 home win over Hallahan. Senior Sarah Wilson paced the team with 12 points. The Panthers started the game with a 20-4 run and the second half on a 14-2 spree.

Olyvia Longacre scored seven of her 12 points in the first quarter to help Christopher Dock cruise to an early lead and a 53-27 win over visiting Sacred Heart. Jill Bolton and Kereece Seuren each added nine points for Dock.

Unionville won at Avon Grove, 61-17. Micayla Flores scored a game-high 18 points, and the Indians' defense did the rest.

Sammy Lochner scored 12 points and dished out five assists for Abington in a 60-22 home victory against Mastery Charter North.

Catholic Academies. Gwynedd Mercy knocked off visiting Merion Mercy, 42-33. Erica DeCandido scored 15 points and shot 7 for 8 from the foul line.

Suburban One National. Neshaminy won at William Tennent, 50-37. McKenna Mullin and Maddie Murray led Neshaminy with 15 points each. Stephanie Donahue and Sarah Oliveira each grabbed 10 rebounds.

Ches-Mont American. Oxford snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 51-35 home win over Octorara. Melanie Kemps scored 16 points, and Alex Fernandez added 13 for the Hornets. Amber Stirling paced Octorara with 12.
