Stephen T. Murchake, 58, of the Cecil section of Monroe Township, chief of Cecil Fire Company No. 1 from 1992 to 2013, died of cardiac arrest on Thursday, Jan. 30, at Kennedy University Hospital in Washington Township.

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Murchake graduated from what is now Camden County Technical Schools and was a lifelong electrician, his wife, Kathleen, said.

Most recently, she said, he worked in South Jersey for an electrical contracting firm in Bucks County.

A relative, who was a former chief of the Cecil Fire Company, introduced him to the firefighting life, she said.

Mr. Murchake and his fellow firefighters took part in the response to 9/11 in a "support" role, according to his wife.

Besides his wife, Mr. Murchake is survived by son Dillon, daughter Madison, and two sisters.

A viewing was set from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, at the McCann-Healey Funeral Home, 851 Monmouth St., Gloucester City, before a life celebration there at 5 p.m.

Donations may be sent to the Madison Murchake Educational Fund, Box 358, Gloucester City, N.J. 08030.
