Paulsboro wins 35th sectional crown

The tide turned for good on a one-point decision.

After Paulsboro began the wrestling match by winning the first five bouts, Collingswood responded by taking the next five, cutting what was once a 28-point Red Raiders lead to eight.

Paulsboro's Davontae Randall, however, topped Paul Lunney, 1-0, in a 285-pound bout that was stopped multiple times because of Lunney's bloody nose.

"I was kind of nervous, because I beat him, but it was a close match," Randall said. "I knew it was going to be a good match. I kind of just worked harder than him."

Randall's win began a four-bout winning streak to close the match for Paulsboro, which beat Collingswood, 42-16, Friday night to win the South Jersey Group 1 championship for the 35th time.

"A lot of kids are sick this week," Paulsboro coach Paul Morina said. "It really went through a lot of us. A couple guys sick, hurt, and they all came back at the last minute."

After five bouts, Paulsboro (21-1) was leading by 25-0. Collingswood (27-6) had incurred a three-point penalty because of a flagrant misconduct.

With two seconds remaining in the third period of the 145-pound bout, Paulsboro's Tom Paulsen was head-butted, turning what would have been a three-point Paulsen decision into a nine-point outcome, as Paulsen was awarded a victory by disqualification.

"I didn't see the head butt," Morina said. "I actually didn't see it at the time. He did it. It's uncalled for. It just rouses things up, and it makes it tougher for him.

"I just didn't want anybody else on the team to retaliate or do anything."

Despite the large deficit, the Panthers won the next five matches. Morina said he didn't believe that the head butt had anything to do with the run, adding that the matchups simply favored Collingswood.

Paulsboro has won 29 state titles, but Bound Brook has won the last two and is the favorite to win this year. Morina said he isn't worried about facing Bound Brook yet.

"We're just going to go and take one match at a time," Morina said.
