Royalty meets the royals

British stage and screen royalty on Monday hobnobbed with British, erm, royalty at an event at Buckingham Palace celebrating the 60th anniversary of HRH Queen Elizabeth II's service as patron of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Liz and granddaughter-in-law Kate Middleton received a host of boldfacers including Uma Thurman, Joely Richardson, John Hurt, Michael Sheen, Oscar-nominated director Steve McQueen, and Joan Collins.

Also present was Helena Bonham Carter, who played Liz's mum, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, in The King's Speech, and Dame Helen Mirren, who played Liz II herself in The Queen.

Liz's grandson Prince William on Sunday presented Mirren with the BAFTA Fellowship, telling the audience, "I should probably call her granny."

William's wife, Kate, giggled Monday, telling Mirren, "My husband called you granny last night."

Jimmy's first day at school

Remember the first day of school? Nerve-racking! Yet so exciting.

So new Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon felt Monday morning, a few hours before he was to take the helm for the first time as permanent host.

"February 17, 2014, This is it," he wrote on Instagram. "I can't even begin to describe what we are all feeling right now here at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, NYC. But - I know that we'll never have this exact feeling ever again." Of course, by the time you read this, the feeling will be gone. We hope Jimmy's debut will have gone as smoothly as his musings.

It's Rowling, but not Rowling

Post- Potter author J.K. Rowling this summer will release her second mystery novel under her Robert Galbraith pseudonym. Due June 24 from Little, Brown, Silkworm has Detective Cormoran Strike investigate the disappearance of a novelist.

AC/DC too young to die

Sexagenarian screamer Brian Johnson's band AC/DC is cutting its first new LP since '08's Black Ice. The boys also plan a 40th anniversary tour.

"So I think we're going to try to do 40 gigs, 40 shows," Brian tells Andy Preston of Palm Beach radio station WKGR-FM, "to thank the fans for their undying loyalty."

A Julianne Hough aporia

Did the hairdo serve as the occasion for the new boyfriend, or did he inspire a new 'do?

Such are the dilemmas that beset us here at SideShow's palatial Gossip Compound.

Fact: Julianne Hough, 25, blessed dancer-actor and former Ryan Seacrest sweetheart, has a new guy, Washington Capitals hockey player Brooks Laich, 30, says Britain's Daily Mail.

J.H. also has a cute new 'do.

Commando but not a SEAL

Acclaimed American Hustle star and Philadelphia-region hero Bradley Cooper on Monday told Ellen DeGeneres he was commando (sans underwear) when he met President Obama at a recent White House state dinner. "So," Cooper said, "I'm prepping for a new movie . . . and nothing fits anymore."
