The District Attorney's Office on Thursday charged a South Philadelphia teenager with murder in the stabbing death of a 14-year-old boy.

Police say Amber Hellesten, 15, stabbed Azim Chaplin once in the chest Feb. 11 on the 2100 block of Watkins Street. The motive remained unclear Thursday, but witnesses have told police that Hellesten and other girls had been arguing with Chaplin when she pulled a folding knife from a coat pocket and stabbed him. The blade pierced Chaplin's heart.

Hellesten - who has a previous arrest for assault - then ran around the corner to the house where she lives on the 2000 block of Sigel Street. Police said they recovered the knife in her bedroom.

Hellesten was initially charged as an adult with attempted murder, as Chaplin clung to life for five days. He died of his wounds Sunday at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Hellesten also was charged with aggravated assault and weapons offenses. She is scheduled for a preliminary hearing March 4 in Family Court.
