This season has been a different type of ride for Souderton wrestler Kolton Veit.

Saddled with the loss of his best friend to leukemia two weeks before the start of the season, the Indians senior has taken the weight of those emotions out on the mat.

"It's been a hard time, but I like to use my anger out on the mats," Veit said. "I always pray to him and to God before my matches now. It's just made this year completely different, and I have more motivation to be successful now than I ever have before."

Veit tapped that motivation one more time in a gritty, 8-6 decision against Pennridge senior Ben Ross in the 126-pound final at the District 1 Class AAA East tournament Saturday at Hatboro-Horsham.

Veit's win avenged an 8-4 loss to Ross in the Suburban One Continental championships last year.

"I didn't make any big changes against him," Veit said. "I just wrestled quicker this time, and I really pushed myself."

After winning the district title in his freshman year, Veit took third in 2012 and failed to place a year ago after being disqualified in the early rounds of the tournament. That added something to his gold-medal performance in his last go-round at districts.

Veit qualified for the state championships in his sophomore season, but a skin condition prevented Veit from competing at Hershey.

Two years later, there might not be a more fitting send-off to Veit's high school wrestling career than a spot atop the podium at Hershey on March 8.

"I want to make it to states and place in the top five," said Veit, who improved to 32-3 this season. "Of course, the goal is to always be No. 1, but to get to states and place in the top five is a pretty big goal for me."

Council Rock South took the team title and had one gold-medal winner, freshman Riley Palmer at 106 pounds. Palmer dispatched Pennridge sophomore Kordell Rush by a 3-0 decision.

Pennridge took second in team scoring and crowned two champions: senior Scott Parker (120) and sophomore Kyle Gentile (160).
