Posted: February 28, 2014

In a rematch of last season's Class AAA state-title game, Archbishop Carroll cruised past Imhotep Charter, 53-37, Wednesday night at Archbishop Ryan to clinch District 12's third seed in next week's state boys' basketball playoffs.

Junior forward Derrick Jones led the way with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Ernest Aflakpui added 14 rebounds and six points. Austin Tilghman dished out seven assists and had seven points.

Jaekwon Carlyle and Basil Thompson each had eight points for Imhotep.

Both teams will open the state playoffs on March 7. Carroll awaits the runner-up from District 3. Imhotep, the reigning state champ, awaits District 3's champion.

Imhotep and Carroll will be seeded on opposite sides of the bracket and can meet again only in the final.

Susquehanna Township and Manheim Central will play for the District 3 championship at 8 Friday night in Hershey.

Ray Gionta, who spent the last 11 seasons in charge at Marple Newtown, has been tabbed as the new head coach at Sun Valley.

"It's tough to leave, but I'm excited about the challenge and the opportunity to build something at Sun Valley," Gionta, 60, said Wednesday night.

Gionta, who compiled a 65-55 record (.542 winning percentage) with the Tigers, replaces Jim Grugan at Sun Valley.
