Villa Maria swims to 4th straight state title

Villa Maria earned its fourth straight PIAA Class AA state swimming and diving championship Saturday at Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa., totaling 220 points in the two-day event.

Villa Maria wrapped up the meet with its lone win Saturday, in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Julie Dobson, Maura McManus, Emily Cornell, and Olivia Giampietro finished in 3 minutes, 30.09 seconds, more than three seconds faster than second-place Scranton Prep.

Villa Maria also won the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays Friday.

Allie Szekely of Gwynedd Mercy set another state record at the meet, in the 100 backstroke. In the preliminary round, she finished in 53.80 to break the mark of 53.88 held by Kristen Shickora from Marian Catholic. Szekely stayed strong and won the final, finishing in 54.55 seconds.

Szekely, a sophomore, on Friday won the 200 individual medley, an event in which she set the record last year.

Cornell finished second in the 100 backstroke with a 55.52.

Upper Moreland's Sydney Szopo won the 1-meter diving competition, earning 427.45 points.

Phoenixville's Maddie Cooke finished second in the 100 breaststroke. She touched up in 1:03.53. Lauren Barber from Wilmington Area won the event in 1:03.05. Olivia Tierney from Villa Maria took third in 1:05.58.

Nazareth Academy finished second in the team scoring with 131 points.

In boys' races, Upper Moreland's Iain Smith placed second in the 100 breaststroke, with a time of 58.32. Bloomsberg's Noah Crawford won in 57.61.

Upper Moreland had the best finish of any Southeastern Pennsylvania school, placing 13th with 49 points. Mars won the event with 152.
