One dead, one hospitalized, one sought by cops in hit-and-run

TWO EARLY-MORNING accidents at the same location in New Jersey have left one man dead, one in the hospital and one on the run.

Ronale Thomas, of Brockton, Mass., was driving eastbound on Admiral Wilson Boulevard about 3:10 a.m. yesterday when he struck and killed pedestrian Victor Gutierrez, according to Pennsauken Township police.

When Thomas exited his vehicle to tend to Gutierrez, he was hit by another driver, who fled the scene.

"He hits the guy - it was not his fault, the guy jumped right in front of him - he gets out to go help him and the car comes by and whacks him," Sgt. Chris Sulzbach said. "That car takes off."

Thomas was returning to Massachusetts after delivering blood to Cape May County for the Red Cross. Police don't know why Gutierrez, 31, of El Paso, Texas, was in the street.

"It could be anything from being highly intoxicated to committing suicide," Sulzbach said. "We don't know. We're waiting for toxicology results."

Thomas is in stable condition after undergoing surgery. He suffered a head contusion and broken bones.

Police say the hit-and-run driver was in a silver or gray car, possibly a 1996-2006 Ford or Mercury, such as a Taurus or Sable. The car's passenger side-view mirror broke off at the scene.

Tipsters can call Sulzbach in the Pennsauken Police Traffic Division at 856-488-0080, ext. 2300.
