Russian roulette punk sentenced

A GUN-TOTING punk who threatened a Wissinoming woman with Russian roulette last year is now behind bars.

Steven Burns, 25, was sentenced to 21 to 42 years in prison yesterday after pleading guilty to aggravated assault, robbery and related offenses in connection with a violent home invasion last March, Assistant District Attorney Lauren McHale said.

Burns and Rodney Smith, 28, burst into a home on Carver Street near Harbison Avenue after telling the victim - whose name wasn't released - that they knew her husband, McHale said.

Once inside, Burns forced the woman into an upstairs bedroom, threw her on the floor and then, as the woman's 4-year-old son looked on, pointed a gun at her head and threatened to play Russian roulette with her until she gave them her valuables.

Luckily for the woman, her 12-year-old daughter was able to hide in the home's basement and call police. A 5-day-old infant was not harmed.

When officers arrived and nabbed the two crooks, Smith had the victim's jewelry stashed in his pocket, McHale said.

For his role, Smith was sentenced yesterday to nine to 18 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated assault, robbery and related offenses.
