Sideshow: Skater Weir joins ranks of divorced

Splitsville for Weir's marriage

There's trouble in Johnny Weir's life. The 29-year-old figure skater has filed for divorce from spouse Victor Voronov after 27 months, the Coatesville native announced via Twitter on Thursday.

"It is with great sadness that I announce that my husband and I are no longer together," Weir said.

"I have been sad for a long time. . . . And unfortunately don't foresee a way to resolve our current marital issues."

Though he never actively worked to conceal his sexuality, Weir did not publicly come out as a gay man until January 2011. Eleven months later, on New Year's Eve, he wed Voronov in a civil ceremony in New York. Weir called it "the greatest moment in my life."

Weir's personal life may be in turmoil, but his star has been rising in his second career as a broadcast professional and TV personality.

After announcing his retirement from competitive skating in October, he teamed up with fellow figure skating retiree Tara Lipinski to provide ice skating news and commentary at the Sochi Winter Olympics for NBC. And last month, he and Lipinski were hired by celeb news show Access Hollywood to offer fashion commentary at the Oscars.

Voronov, described in most media reports simply as a Georgetown law school grad, also took to Twitter on Thursday to register his distress.

"Shocked by the abrupt ending of my marriage and am dealing with the trauma including multiple things I am just now becoming aware of," he said.

Yet the breakup can't be that much of a surprise: According to RadarOnline, the couple appeared in court earlier this month after Voronov accused Weir of biting him during an argument. The case was dismissed.

Thursday, Weir got in the last word.

"No matter what, I am a cheerleader of love and partnership and creation," he tweeted in response to Voronov.

"I am sad yet I am thankful that I was loved and that I could love."
