Kathleen Wixted Underwood, 60, of Cape May Court House, a former registered nurse and health-care volunteer, died of heart failure Monday, March 17, at Inspira Medical Center in Vineland.

Born in Philadelphia, Mrs. Underwood graduated from the former Cardinal Dougherty High School in Philadelphia and earned a bachelor's in nursing at Rutgers-Camden University.

She earned her RN diploma at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and studied toward a master's in nursing at the University of Pennsylvania, her husband, Joseph P. Underwood Jr., said.

After beginning her career at Einstein, Mrs. Underwood worked as a nurse in intensive-care units for several hospitals in South Jersey, often "staying with patients when she was off the clock," her husband said.

She worked at the former Kessler Memorial Hospital in Hammonton in the 1970s, and at Underwood-Memorial Hospital in Woodbury and at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, both in the 1980s.

In 1986-87, Mrs. Underwood worked for the Camden office of Volunteers of America "on weekends and her days off," her husband said.

"She would give physical exams to the homeless women and check their babies" before sending them on to Cooper University Hospital, he said.

And in the early 1990s, he said, Kennedy University Hospital in Washington Township "hired her to help set up their ICU."

In the mid-1990s, he said, she retired because "she burned herself out from being a nurse. Basically she couldn't do it any longer."

Besides her husband of 40 years, Mrs. Underwood is survived by son Joseph P. III, daughter Nicole Sharp, two brothers, a sister, and three grandchildren.

A viewing was set from 9 a.m. Saturday, March 22, at Our Lady of the Angels Church, 35 E. Mechanic St., Cape May Court House, before a 10 a.m. Funeral Mass there.

Donations may be sent to Volunteers of America, 235 White Horse Pike, Collingswood, N.J. 08107.
