DARBY TWP. Already accused of inappropriately touching second graders, a Delaware County teacher is facing new charges, and officials are investigating how school officials handled pupils' allegations.

Paul Hochschwender, 54, of Broomall, a second-grade teacher at Darby Township School, is being held in Delaware County jail on multiple assault counts for allegedly touching four 7-year-old girls and - several years before - a student, now 18.

On March 12, Hochschwender was charged on similar counts related to three pupils and released on $100,000 bail. The Southeast Delco School District said he is on administrative leave.

The four 7-year-olds told similar stories about Hochschwender's touching them while they were in class in "private parts" outside their clothes, according to the affidavit.

"He's a touchy-feely guy who didn't know what personal space was," the 18-year-old is quoted as saying. She reported the incident to a guidance counselor, who made her feel guilty and suggested the allegations could ruin Hochschwender's career. At a meeting involving the girl's mother, the principal, and the counselor, because Hochschwender was present, the student denied the incident occurred, the affidavit said.

Hochschwender worked in the Radnor Township School District from 1993 to 2000.
