Pa. Boys: Tues. Pa. boys: Northeast surprises Washington

Matt Sweeney's overtime goal Tuesday helped Washington pull off a rare feat in Public League boys' lacrosse: beating Northeast.

Sweeney's winner gave visiting Washington an 8-7 victory and handed Northeast its first league loss in more than two full seasons. Washington hadn't beaten Northeast since 2011.

Phelan Sweeney led Washington with four goals.

Inter-Ac. Forry Smith scored two goals and assisted on two others as the Haverford School rolled past visiting Penn Charter, 19-3. Shane McBride, Grant Ament, Keyveat Postell, and Brandon Shima added two goals apiece.

Ryan Hilburn scored four times and had an assist to pace host Malvern Prep in a 15-6 victory over visiting Springside Chestnut Hill. Billy Coyle, Connor Glancy, and Kevin McGeary each added two goals. Adam Goldner scored a goal and had two assists. Charles Kelly won 21 of 25 face-offs.

Matt Ernst controlled 10 of the 13 draws he took, and Episcopal Academy cruised to an 11-2 win at Germantown Academy. Jake Martelucci and Curt Zappala each scored twice. Brian Zappala made six saves.

Central. Dylan Protesto scored four goals, and Penncrest held off host Ridley, 12-9, to remain unbeaten. Will Manganiello added three goals, and Ryan Kinnand scored twice. Dylan McCleaft made nine saves.

Owen Scheuerle netted three goals, and Radnor scored twice in the fourth quarter to pull out an 8-6 win at Conestoga. Jack Norton and Jack Wilson added two goals each.

Suburban One Continental. Zach Erwine and Nick Paci connected for three goals each as Hatboro-Horsham downed host North Penn, 10-2.

Suburban One National. Zach Abraham scored four goals to guide visiting Pennsbury over Truman, 14-2. Nick Dugan added three goals.

Nonleague. Mike Cooke's sixth goal of the afternoon came with 11 seconds remaining and lifted Sun Valley to an 8-7 win at Downingtown West. Cooke came from behind the net on the right side and fired the shot. He scored five goals in the final period. Sophomore goalie Chris Hassett made 13 saves.

Will Abbott and Kip McGuire each scored two goals and assisted on two others, and Westtown eased by visiting Perkiomen School, 11-4. Clay McKee netted three goals.

Mike Knaus collected five points as Devon Prep/Delco Christian ripped host Phelps, 8-0. Knaus, a senior midfielder, had three goals and two assists.


Tom Derer struck out 13 and allowed four hits in Archbishop Ryan's 4-1 win at Father Judge in the Catholic League.

Chris Sanchez's two-run double in the fifth inning broke the game open.

Public D. Greg Clemens struck out 10, and New Foundations scored 10 runs in the first inning of a 14-4 defeat of visiting Strawberry Mansion.

Nonleague. Dylan Evert went 4 for 5 with two triples and four RBIs to power Bristol past host Calvary Christian, 14-9.
