Camden police look at man in other rapes

He raped the women in an abandoned building, police said, one at knifepoint, the other a week later at gunpoint.

Now, police are investigating whether Reynaldo J. Nieves, 35, of Camden - who has been charged in both incidents - is responsible for other rapes in the city.

"He's a predator in every sense of the word," Camden County Police Chief Scott Thomson said at a news conference Thursday.

Nieves is facing multiple charges, including aggravated sexual assault and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Both rapes allegedly occurred near Sixth and Jackson Streets.

Police said one of the victims talked to officers March 27, the day after she was allegedly attacked. Nieves attacked another woman April 2 after luring her from Broadway, police said. He was arrested the following day.

Other circumstances of the incidents were unclear Thursday. A police spokesman declined to provide the incident reports on each case, saying they were "open investigations" and unavailable to the public.

Thomson on Thursday said the violent nature of the assaults led police to believe the rapes were not isolated. "We believe there may be more victims out there," he said.

Any potential victims or individuals with information are being asked to call 856-757-7042 and ask for the Special Victims Unit.
