Sister Catherine Mary Murray, 83, a schoolteacher and administrator, died Friday, April 4, of cardiac failure at Holy Child Center, Rosemont.

The sixth child of Joseph and Kathryn Murray, Sister Catherine Mary was born and raised in Philadelphia.

She was taught by the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary School and J. W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School. That early exposure to the nuns prompted her to enter the Society of the Holy Child Jesus in 1948.

But when her father died two weeks later, she left the society to care for her mother. In 1951, she reentered the convent, and professed her final vows in 1958. She was a Sister of the Holy Child Jesus for more than five decades.

Sister Catherine Mary's career took her to New York City and then to St. Rose Parish School in Portland, Ore., where she served as a teacher and principal.

In 1971, Sister Catherine Mary returned to the Philadelphia area to teach at Holy Spirit School, Sharon Hill, St. Edward's School, Philadelphia, and Holy Child Academy, Drexel Hill.

From 1980 to 1983, Sister Catherine Mary was the director of Holy Child Center in Rosemont, a home for ill and retired sisters. She returned to the faculty of Holy Spirit School. Starting in 1987, Sister Catherine Mary again was assigned to Holy Child Academy.

In 1999, Sister Catherine Mary took on what was perhaps her greatest challenge: As the reappointed director of Holy Child Center, she managed the renovation of the big stone building facing Montgomery Avenue. The facility had not been fully updated for many years.

Sister Catherine Mary retired in 2005, and a year later moved to Holy Child Center.

"Throughout Sister Catherine Mary's life, kindness and a keen sense of humor marked her ministries," her colleagues said in a tribute.

Sister Catherine Mary earned a bachelor of science degree from Fordham University in 1958, and a master of science degree from the University of Portland in 1963.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Thursday, April 10.

Donations may be made to the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, 1341 Montgomery Ave., Rosemont, Pa. 19010.
