A fatal shooting occurred in Chester at around 11 a.m. Thursday at 12th Street and Melrose Avenue near the Widener University campus.
The shooting did not involve anyone from the Widener community, police said. However, as a precaution, Widener sent a message to students and staff at 11:01 a.m. that shots were fired and to shelter in place. The lockdown ended at 11:27 a.m.
"You exercise caution in a situation like that," said University spokesman Dan Hanson.
This is the second time the university has told the campus community to stay indoors because of a shooting. On January 20, a student was shot as he sat in a parking lot on campus.
